A rough guide to what polish we use for repairing different chair types:

Windsor kitchen chairs c1789-c1910

Wax polish is a great classic polish for repairing Windsor chair finishes. These chairs are typically made of elm seats with either ash, elm or yew legs, spindles and splats all of which these timbers really sing with a good wax polish.

Timber swivel office chairs c1870-c1930

These are ypically made of oak, mahogany or walnut. Depending on how badly damaged the finish is on the chair, one would seal with a few coats of shellac then a wax.

Dining chairs, various ages

Chairs made of mahogany, walnut, oak, rosewood are common. There are such a large variety, but generally French polished or oiled is the best finish.

Retro or modern chairs

A large variety of timbers used on these chairs from all around the world. But the majority are made from teak, oak, beech, rosewood or sapele. Typically, if the polish is damaged, one would tend to use an oil or a glaze.
